I couldn’t be prouder of my team at the Department of Education. This week, it was announced that through their hard work, we have worked with schools to transform 193 schools from low-performing to high-performing.
Why is this especially exciting? It means that over 108,000 Hoosier students are in better schools, and they never had to change schools.
When I arrived at the department in January 2013, I already knew that we needed to change the way state government operated. I talked to educators and administrators in the field, and they said they needed someone to support their work, not hand down mandates from Indianapolis.
So the first thing I did was reorganize the department – at no extra cost to taxpayers – into an Outreach Division for School Improvement.
Outreach coordinators were hired in the communities where they already lived, and their first task was to get to know every single principal in Indiana. They helped these principals access resources that they needed at the department and cut through bureaucratic red tape.
The results speak for themselves – 193 schools improved, 108,000 students attending better schools.
If you haven’t already, please share success stories like this and more with your family and friends before Election Day. Tell them that we need to continue working together to provide the best possible education for our students.
